Pukeawe

Pukeawe was knit during the weeks before I flew off to Hawaii to get married. The Pukeawe berries that grow in Volcano were a part of my bouquet, and the shell pattern that lines the sides of the sock remind me of the shells that formed the aisle. I wanted to have something to warm both the feet and the heart in winter, when beaches and flowers seem so far away.

Knitpicks Bare fingering weight[merino/silk; 440 yds per 100g skein]; hand-dyed Cochineal; 1 skein

1 30-inch US #2/2.5mm circular needle

Tapestry needle

GAUGE

38 sts/48 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch

PATTERN NOTES

The pattern was designed for magic loop, but is easily transferable to whatever method you prefer.

The sock is quite roomy, for toe-wiggling purposes, and should fit all sizes; if not, simply add in a couple of extra stitches before beginning the shell pattern at the side of the foot.

MB (Make Bobble): k1,p1,k1,p1 into next st, turn, k4, turn, sl st purlwise, p3tog, psso.

PATTERN

Toe

Turkish cast on sixteen stitches (8 for top of foot, 8 for bottom of foot).

*K1, M1R, k to last st on needle, m1L, K1. Repeat from * around

K all stitches

Repeat these two rows until 68 stitches are on needles.

Foot

Work lace pattern below across stitches for top of foot, work sts for bottom of foot in stockinette.

Rounds 1-4 are set up rounds and are worked one time only. Lace pattern will repeat from R5.

R1: K13, yo, skp, k2, MB, k16.

R2 and all even: K all sts.

R3: K1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, k8, yo, skp, k2, MB, k9, yo, p1, p3tog, yo, k1.

R5: K17, yo, skp, k2, MB, k12

R7: K1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, k10, MB, k2, yo, skp, k2, MB, k4, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, k1.

R9: K14, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, skp, k2, MB, k8.

R11: K1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, k6, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k6, yo, skp, k3, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, k1.

R13: K10, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k19.

Repeat from R5 until sock measures 3.5 inches less than desired length of foot, ending with an odd-numbered round.

Gusset

R1: Work in pattern across top of foot, k1, yo, k to last st of bottom of foot, yo, k1.

R2: Work in pattern across top of foot, k all sts for bottom of foot.

Repeat these 2 rounds 9X more (34 sts for top of foot, 54 sts for bottom of foot).

Heel

Heel will be worked back and forth across sts for bottom of foot.

R1 [RS]: K41, w&t.
R2 [WS]: P28, w&t.
R3: K to last st before wrapped st, w&t.
R4: P to last st before wraped st, w&t.
R5: K to last st before wrapped st, w&t.

Repeat rows 4 & 5 until there are 11 unwrapped sts in the center.

R1 [WS]: P11, p next 8 sts together with their wraps (pick up wrap, p it together with the st), pick up next wrap, p3tog (wrap, st, and next st). Turn.

R2: [RS]: Sl1, k19, k9 together with their wraps (pick up wrap, ssk it together with the st), pick up next wrap, sssk (wrap, st, and next st). Turn.

R3: Sl1, p28, p2tog, turn.

R4: Sl1, (k1, sl1) 14X, ssk, turn.

Repeat rows 3 & 4 10X more—all stitches have been worked.

Leg

Back of leg now has 30 sts, front of leg has 34. Therefore, the lace pattern for the back of leg will be slightly different. Resume working in the round, working the lace pattern for front of leg as above, and for back of leg as follows:

R5: K15, yo, skp, k2, MB, k10.

R6 and all even: K all sts.

R7: K14, MB, k2, yo, skp, k2, MB, k8.

R9: K12, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, skp, k2, MB, k6.

R11: K10, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k6, yo, skp, k7.

R13: K8, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k17.

R15: K6, MB, k2, k2tog, yo, k2, MB, k16.

R17: K7, k2tog, yo, k2, yo, skp, k2, MB, k14.

R19: K13, yo, skp, k2, MB, k10.

R20: K all sts.

Continue as you have been until sock reaches 1.5 inches less than desired length, ending with an even-numbered round.

Cuff

R1: Work first 6 sts in shell pattern as you have been, k2tog, (p1, k1) to last 6 sts of front of leg, work 6 sts in shell pattern. P1, k2tog, (p1, k1) to last st of back of leg, end p1.

R2: Work first 6 sts in shell pattern, (k1, p1) to last 7 sts of front of leg, k1, work 6 sts in shell pattern. (p1, k1) to last st of back of leg, end p1.

Repeat R2 until cuff measures 1.5 inches, or desired length.

Shell Pattern (worked over 6 sts):

R1-3: K all sts

R4: K1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo.

FINISHING

BO using the sewn bind-off method. Weave in all ends.
